Famous fashion

Throughout American history, there have been many famous fashion movements, and each movement has had a face. In other words, there has been a person who has embodied a specific style so much, that they have become associated with it. Here are some famous fashion icons from past decades, and the different looks which they made famous.

Betty Bop. Even though this 1930's cutie-pie was an animated cartoon character, her effect on the decade's style was quite real. In her dark, swirling, above-the-knee flapper dresses, thigh-high stockings, simple, high-heeled pumps and short, wavy hair, Betty Bop became known as perhaps the most famous animated sex symbol, and a depression-era style icon.

Edie Sedgwick. In the 1960's this American actress, model and socialite became known for being one of Avant-Garde artist, Andy Warhol's beautiful muses. Sedgwick took the fashion world of the sixties by storm with her short, straight hair, thin, straight legs, huge, dangling earrings, super high-heels and furs. Her glamorous looks still make vintage returns in today's fashion world.

Claire Danes. In the 1990's, a young Ms. Danes played the role of Angela Chase on the popular television series, My So-Called Life. In this hit series, Danes popularized layering, chokers, floral-print dresses, and clunky boots. Altogether, she achieved the perfect mix of femininity and nineties grunge. Today, fashions still often draw inspiration from Angela Chase's youthful, eclectic wardrobe.

Lady Gaga. Today, New York City-based singer and performer Lady Gaga has taken the fashion world by storm. With her edgy, futuristic, skin-tight metallic outfits, platinum blonde hair, and outrageous ensembles, Lady Gaga has set a precedent in the modern fashion world by being thorough and taking risks.

These are only a few examples of countless fashion icons throughout the decades. Who knows which actress, model, fashion design student or undiscovered it-girl will be the next phenomenon? If there's one thing you can learn from these famous fashion icons, it's that it takes confidence to pull off an edgy look, so when you bust out your vintage duds to try and re-create their magic, don't check your confidence at the door.
